What is a Prostate Enlargement?
Prostate is one of the primary organs in the male reproductive system. It produces liquids in semen that help to sustain and protect sperm against natural vaginal acids. The prostate is constantly growing.
The Stages of Prostate Growth
1.5 grams at birth
11 grams during puberty period
18 grams in the early to middle 20’s
31 grams from the early 50’s until around age 70
The last phase of growth is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
With the prostate growth there could be an excess pressure on the urethra. With the pressure increase the urethra can become pinched. It can lead to painful and embarrassing signs such as painful urination, erectile dysfunction and urinary hesitancy. If untreated it may require surgical intervention.
The prostate differs from most of the other organs due to its growth in size during several stages of a man’s life. This grows is non-cancerous and appears to be a part of the normal maturation process.
There are two theories of prostate enlargement based on changes hormonal levels. DHT penetrates in prostate cells which can trigger the growth of prostate. The maturation is accompanied by the testosterone and estrogen levels change. The increase of estrogen level leads to prostate cell growth, especially with augmenting DHT levels.
